On Saturday, the John Coleridge Patteson University (JCPU) Fundraising Committee visited the construction site of the university’s first administration building, expressing satisfaction with the project’s steady progress. Situated on Kosu land in Central Guadalcanal, this development marks an important milestone for JCPU, a future educational hub envisioned by the Anglican Church of Melanesia to foster faith-based learning and community service in the Solomon Islands.
The two-story administration building, part of JCPU’s Theological College, is designed to accommodate key university facilities, including administrative offices, classrooms, and conference spaces. According to Mr. Simon Uesikoke, JCPU Project Officer – Technical, the current administration building structure is on track to be completed by December 2024, with full construction expected to finish by February 2025. However, weather conditions and material availability may affect timelines, Mr. Uesikoke noted.
The administration building’s layout spans two levels: Downstairs: A classroom, three offices, a conference room, a reception area, a kitchen, and two restroom facilities. Upstairs: Another classroom, seven offices, and a restroom.
The JCPU Fundraising Committee, led by Rev. Dr. Ben Wate, has played a pivotal role in raising funds to bring this project to life. Appointed by the JCPU Planning and Implementation Committee (PPIC) under the leadership of Sir Nathaniel Waena, the committee has spent the past three years organizing fundraisers, such as corporate dinners, bazaars, and raffle ticket sales, to support JCPU’s vision. Funding has come from Anglican parishioners, families, friends, and local businesses, including a generous donation of building materials from Solomon Sheet Steel Company Limited. “We’re immensely grateful for the support from Solomon Sheet Steel and other donors who have helped make this project a reality,” a committee spokesperson remarked. “This building provides a strong foundation for future developments and higher education in the Solomon Islands.”
The Fundraising Committee aims to continue raising funds over the next three years to support additional facilities, including more lecture rooms, staff housing, and student accommodation. The administration building alone is projected to cost approximately SBD 2.2 million.
The JCPU project underscores the Anglican Church of Melanesia’s commitment to establishing a high-quality, faith-based university in the Solomon Islands. Named after Bishop John Coleridge Patteson, a revered missionary in Melanesia, JCPU aims to become a transformative center for education and spiritual growth in the region. The university’s vision is to foster individuals who exemplify true religion, sound learning, and practical skills for meaningful contributions to society. The JCPU will be made up of a Theological College, Teachers Training College, Nursing and Public Health Science College, and Agribusiness College.
During their visit, the Fundraising Committee members expressed pride in the tangible progress of their fundraising efforts. Rev. Dr. Wate and his team left the site optimistic, hoping that the project’s success will inspire further support for this landmark initiative, which they believe will shape the future of Anglican education in Melanesia.
