ACOM Commends Mission Partners And Aid donors For Assistance

THE Anglican Church in the Province of Melanesia (ACOM) applauds the overseas Mission and donor partners for their support through the church towards the devastating flood that strikes Honiara and parts of Guadalcanal.
The report at hand shows 22 people have lost lives and around 52,000 are left homeless as in the first SI National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC). Assessments in the evacuation centers within Honiara and Guadalcanal are on progress to identify the real victims of the disaster.
On behalf of the Church, ACOM Provincial Disaster Committee would like to convey our sincere gratitude and acknowledgement to all our overseas mission and donor partners for the immediate positive response to our request for emergency relief effort towards the Honiara and Guadalcanal flash flood victims which affected almost 40,000 people.
The ACOM Disaster relief support started off on Saturday 12th March and is still continuing with its relief efforts.
The distributions were done in the various evacuation Centers on phases and on days apart from other stakeholders and the National Disaster relief support.
Distribution was also extended to all ACOM institutions located in Northwest and Northeast Guadalcanal affected by the flash flood such as Selwyn College, Kohimarama and the four (4) religious orders households.
Goods for the relief supply were purchased directly to the suppliers and allocated through the two (2) Diocesan Disaster Committees for the coordination and distribution. Rehabilitation supplies will follow upon advice from the responsible authorities.
Trauma counseling through the office of Justice, Peace and Reconciliation Commission, pastoral visits from the priests with in the premises of the Diocese of Guadalcanal and the Diocese of Central Melanesia are amongst other activities the Church are carrying out during this time of hardship.
